My Situation
Personally, I have been using my own favorite baby wipes (more on that later). They work perfectly well. I have been using them on my baby’s butt, thigh, legs, and even arms. I didn’t notice any irritation. However, they were also the first wipes I bought, so they are the only wipes I used so far. I don’t have any complaints about them, but I started thinking more about it recently.
I thought whether there will be something cheaper, and superior quality compared to the wipes I am using right now. I really have no complaints about my current wipes, but if there’s something better, then I am up for it. This is how I got into researching for huggies baby wipes.
My Standards for Baby Wipes
I don’t settle for any kind of wipes. Even though the wipes I am using right now are the only wipes I used so far, but I have done months of thorough research before I allowed myself to buy them. I looked through every forum possible where busy moms talk about their daily challenges.
I realized that the wipes should at least have the following qualities:
- It should not cause irritation
- It should not have a scent (which usually leads to irritation)
- It should not have harmful substances
- It should not rip easily no matter how hard you wipe (while not hurting your baby of course)
- It should be easy to separate one wipe from another wipe, or at least not annoying to separate
- It should be soft
- It should be big and wide (because my hands are big)
- It should be able to endure time (not dry up easily while I store it aside)
- It should not be overly expensive
Do Huggies Qualify Then? – The Good And Bad
Once again, I woke up early in the morning to research baby wipes that are made by Huggies. I was thinking that it shouldn’t be a bad idea to give it a try. They are a famous brand so I thought their wipes would at least be on par with their diaper quality.
As I was doing my research, I was feeling more and more discouraged to buy them, because, these wipes seems to have so many flaws. There are merits to them too, but I will get to them later.
The size of Huggies wipes are small so that was already a no no for me. A wipe should be decently big or else I would run out of “room” very quickly. This is especially true when you are wiping some diarrhea poop. You might need four to five wipes to finish your job, and that sounds extremely inefficient. It’s also annoying. While you are grabbing your wipes, your baby will be squirming around spreading poop plague everywhere. This brings me to the next worst thing this wipe has.
Here’s what some people are saying on Amazon:
It’s Very Hard To Tear Apart With One Hand
It’s very hard to tear apart. These wipes are perforated unlike the wipes I am using right now. Perforated means that all the wipes are connected together by these “dotted lines” just like toilet paper.
The moment you tear it, ideally it should rip at the perforation (the dotted line). Unfortunately, many people complain that it often does not do that. Imagine tearing struggling with your baby’s poop while taking the half of the roll out of the dispenser.
That happens because you are using one hand to pull it out while your other hand is trying to prevent your baby from rolling off the bed, or doing other crazy baby things, and yes, normally sane babies also do crazy baby things.
If I have to rely on two hands to get a wipe out of the dispenser, then that’s a definite no good. Speaking of dispenser, it brings me to the next point.
It Doesn’t Come With A Dispenser
When you buy these wipes, make sure to confirm that it comes with a dispenser. A dispenser is a little box to store your wipes, and it has an open top where you can pull the wipes out. Huggies Natural Care does not have that. Their wipes come in three gigantic bags which are zip loc sealed. Unless you want to pull wipes out of the large bags all the time, then you are in trouble. Not to mention pulling wipes out of the large bags all the time will potentially dry up that whole bag of wipes faster.
Here’s what the reviewers said:
They Leave Behind A Residue
These wipes also have another problem of leaving behind residue after you wipe your baby. That might be a small problem, but my current wipes don’t do that. It’s just annoying to see wipe fragments all over my baby’s butt after I finish wiping. Not to mention those fragments absorbed some of the pee and poop, so I don’t really want to leave it on my baby’s butt to get moldy.
Someone mentioned about the wipe residue on amazon:
The Might Have Glass In Them? – Maybe Not
According to this article on cnn.com, parents claimed that Huggies Wipes have glass in them. This was claimed last year by a parent living in California. Some parents believe that these wipes have glass in them, and some parents don’t believe so.
Let’s be fair here. If Huggies baby wipes really did have glass, then why wasn’t there reports of:
- scratches on baby bottoms?
- blood on baby bottoms?
- baby bottoms needing surgery to remove the glass particles?
The glass scare of Huggies made absolutely no sense, because many babies should be hurt by now if they were wiped by glass.
Huggies Baby Wipes Do Have Merits
These wipes do have their merits as they generally don’t cause anybody irritation. There is even a family who are allergic to everything. They used it and they felt just fine. It also doesn’t leave behind a sticky or greasy residue which can can cause irritation from other baby wipe brands.
Here’s what one reviewer said on amazon:
However I Recommend Something Better
Remember how I keep mentioning the baby wipes that I use personally? I can guarantee you now that they are much better. They are the:
Name: Berkley Jensen Ultra Sensitive Baby Wipes
Price on Amazon: $37.40 (and free shipping)
Smell: No scent
Texture: Super soft
Wipe Size: Large
Individual Dispensers: Definitely a yes
Perforated: Not perforated, individually stacked together and very easy to come apart
My Rating: 10/10 (can’t complain)
I can almost guarantee that you will love these wipes. Give them a try if you haven’t already. You will definitely not regret it. If you have more questions about them then please leave me a comment below, and I will definitely answer it for you.
As a caregiver for my daughter’s baby, I have to use wipes all the time, and never actually thought of researching wipes.
However, I am glad that you brought out several points. Right now we are using Huggies, and you’re right – I don’t see any irritation on the baby’s skin.
I will definitely bring it to my daughter’s attention about the wipes you suggested. Thanks for the review.
Tell her to give BJ wipes a try. It is cheaper per count and really good quality.
I am so glad I read this review of Huggies wipes. We just received a large order of them from Amazon, but next time I will suggest to my wife that we try the ones you suggested. After reading this, I am beginning to think that the Huggies are the reason for the redness and irritation that we have been trying to deal with while changing my son’s diapers. We have been trying different lotions and medicines, but hadn’t thought about changing the wipes. Good points about the dispenser and tearing. And yes, they do dry out quickly. Thank you for posting this review!
Yea many people have complained about the Huggies wipes. Try the BJ wipes and tell me how you feel.
I’ve been changing diapers for six and a half years and I agree with your assessment of Huggies wipes. My wife and I have tried a lot of different brands, and I’ve never been impressed with Huggies.
We really like the Honest wipes, and even the wipes you get from Sam’s Club are pretty good too.
We’ve never tried Berkley Jensen (I’ve never even heard of them), but I’ll have look into them more.
Great review on Huggies baby wipes. I would have really thought that they were the best out there. I mean they are huggies right? So it is nice to read that there are better, safer options out there. Sounds like the Berkley Jensen Ultra Sensitive Baby Wipes is the best way to go when getting baby wipes!
I must say, as a father of three, I couldn’t agree more about the important qualities of a good baby wipe. I also agree that huggies don’t cut if for the same reason. I am glad to have stumbled across this page, for I have bookmarked it and plan to show my wife for future wipe purchases.
I noticed quite a bit about why huggies aren’t the right wipe for a parent with a child pooping in diapers, and that you have only used the one kind of wipe due to your avid research. What about now as time has gone by? Have you ventured out to add wipes that share these awesome wipe qualities? I would love to know more about the options out there that are worth a buy.
Hello Win,
I also used huggies wipes for some time for my daughter and did not like it. My daughter has a sensitive skin and she used to get skin rashes. Now I’m using a different brand but there also I have some complaints. The wipes are really small and thin and does not have a box. After reading your post, I’m now convinced to buy Berkley Jensen Ultra sensitive baby wipes. I will try this and let you know how it works.
I will be looking into the Berkley Jensen wipes after reading this article for sure. I have a 2 month old at home and it is safe to say that we only want the best for our little ones. As far as the glass in the wipes… that is a scary thought!! I could not even imagine how I would react if that were to happen with me. Great information!
My older sister just got pregnant so I will recommend these to her! I had never heard of them before so maybe they will be great like you say! I might have my family buy the Berkley Jensen for her I’m sure they will be great!
Thank you for the great info!
your research into the products is excellent and would save me time when it comes to baby wipes…I sure learned a lot about baby wipes…I would have chosen the huggies wipes but thanks to your review I can make a better selection, thanks. I like how you added the customer reviews. I found 1 miss spelled word, so you know, “The Might Have Glass In Them.”
I haven’t had any of the problems mentioned here with my huggies wipes. They are all that I use. They’re actually the best I’ve found. I don’t have any issues tearing the wipes apart. Well the ones with dotted lines, because the ones that are just stacked are a pain in the butt. As you said almost impossible with my squirming baby.
I will try the ones you’ve recommended though because I’m interested in a healthier choice. For some reason my baby has been getting rashes recently. Maybe it’s because I just started using a new scented one. I’m also interested in finding bigger wipes because it’s absurd to use 4-5 wipes which I currently use for messier poops my daughter has.
We ran into the same issues 13 years ago and I was not a fan of them 25 years ago. They issues 25 yrs ago were more about the harshness of the cloth and scratching my daughter, not to mention the smell that is still very memorable in my mind.
We also steered away from them 13 yrs ago due to all the reasons you mentioned including the breaking away of the fibers that would get lodged in parts that were to be cleaned properly. We suffered terrible rashes as well.
To this day we still use wipes, since it is a good idea, that are not a mainstream brand. I will be taking a look at the ones you suggested. We always purchase non-hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, non-perforated, hand-sized wipes, and yours sound just like what we prefer. Thank you for the candid review!
hi great looking website about huggies wipes.
I used these when my children where born along with the nappies and never had any problems so would recommend to everyone great article and good work.
You have researched these very well and people are going to love this article and will buy.
thanks
grant
Thank you for the very informative article.
Like most, I would have picked Huggies and stuck with them but you opened my eyes to a possible alternative. What is the size of the ones you recommend in comparison to those by Huggies? Do you get the same number of wipes with the ones you selected as you would in a package from Huggies?
Thanks! The information your page provided certainly highlighted a number of areas which are largely overlooked i.e GLASS? in baby wipes? Does trigger alarm bells as to what exactly is in the product, although there are packaging claiming to contain natural ingredients, somehow, I have my doubts. Thank you for your recommendations.
My days of caring for human babies are long gone Win, but I now use baby wipes for my older dog – yes, dogs can at times have messy derrière issues too! And well, although not all the qualifying criteria may need to apply for the care of a dog, certainly size of the wipe, ease to pull it out of the package and, mostly, cost are all vital points. I’m not sure I’d be able to find the brand you recommend, the Berkley Jensen, here in UK, but how do they compare cost wise to other internationally recognised brands such as Huggies?
Thank you.
Hey there, this is some great content for new mothers.
I think that its very important to give your babies comfortable diapers so that they can navigate without irritation. My mother used huggies on me so I will always trust that brand for when I handle young babies. The only thing is that hey may be a bit expensive, but amazon offers a good price.
Even though amazon offers a good price for Huggies wipe, it still has a lot of problems. I really recommend berkley jensen’s baby wipes. They are much better and don’t rip easily. Give them a try instead.
This is a great review of the Huggies baby wipes and a nice comparison with the Berkley Jensen brand that you have been using. It sounds like the Berkley Jensen wipes have all the same positives as the Huggies ones, but they don’t have the negatives. It’s so interesting that a big brand like Huggies would be so careless about the user experience of their product. Requiring 2 hands to tear them doesn’t sound like a good time while changing baby!!
When my first son was born, my wife noticed he would get a rash after being changed. We thought it was from not changing him frequently enough. After frequent changes, he would still get. So we thought it was the diaper. Never did we think it was the wipes because we always brought unscented wipes. Well, turned out to be the wipes. After switching to a different brand, he was okay, never had an issue again. Its so important the product we use on our children.
This is a very thorough review on baby wipes. I have two kids that are now older, but this would have been very helpful when they were in the baby stage. I had never heard that huggies had glass- geez! Personally, I don’t think they would be in business still if this was the case. Perhaps it was an accident that glass got into the wipes (with the lady from California). Anyway, for my friends who have newborns, I will suggest the Berkley Jensen wipes.
Howdy,
I think one you have recommended is a bargain since the shipping is free. Also, thank you for letting us know what are the issues with wipes. I think the chemicals involved such as the ‘glass content controversy’ also happened whether it is found to be true or it is just a fabricated article. The main thing is that the babies feel comfortable as their reaction on wipes determine us in selecting the right ones.
The Good Baby Diaper site is very helpful for any young mother struggling with decisions on what is best for your baby, after all these little baby’s are very important and important you get it right.
It has great information and well written and well laid out, very enjoyable information witch i will pass on to my friends and family.
Can you tell me would you recommend talc in Diapers
Thank you
Thank you for your enlightening review of Huggies baby wipes. I think that your post will definitely help parents make a better decision when it comes to the purchase of this item. When my son was still a baby, I was using a Japanese brand that had most of the characteristics you’re looking for. I appreciated that it’s paraben-free and microbiologically-tested, which were very important factors to me.
Ah thank you so much for pointing out this product Berkley jenson. My baby son is getting a really bad rash on his legs and I have tried everything but nothing works. The doctor prescribed a specialised cream but that didn’t work either, its been a nightmare. I will check out your recommendation, fingers crossed it will help us…
Hey, great article. We currently use Huggies brand wipes and haven’t had any trouble with them but I had never heard of Berkeley Jensen. They are cheaper than the Huggies we buy so we will be trying some out. I’ll let you know what we think about them. Thanks for the info on the Berkeley Jensen brand.
This is a great, detailed review.
I agree that baby wipes should not have any added fragrance.
Fragrance is usually made up of chemicals and it gives me headaches, so why would I want to put fragrance on a baby?
Do you have any recipes to make your own baby wipes?
Baby wipes are often overlooked but put yourself in your babies shoes. Would you rather have your butt wiped with silk or tracing paper. A lot of baby wipes can cause irritation and nappy rash. Not only does the baby use the wipes, I also use baby wipes out in the field (I’m a soldier) but I don’t use them to wipe my butt I use them for my face to wipe off camoflage cream. Over here in the UK, me and my wife use Johnsons baby wipes. They are a premium brand but as they say you get what you pay for. Great review on baby wipes.
Very informative. Extremely happy I read this review.I think this what a lot of parents needed to know. Many of these brands do not focus on quality, rather they focus on quantity and revenue. I really had no idea those other brands were so ineffective. This information is much appreciated. Also, thank you for letting us know a better brand to use..
I’m so glad you reviewed the huggies wipes! I received a whole box of them and a lot of my friends were raving about them but I just wasn’t that convinced. Hated the fact that they all joined together, and it kept irritating my baby! Will definitely check out your recommendation =) I’m still looking for the ‘holy grail’ of baby wipes, perhaps this will be it!
xo

You have a very complete run down on diapers. It takes me back to the days of the cloth diapers. (40 years ago).
All my babies are having littles of their own. I think that the critique on Huggies, I have heard from my daughters. The youngest daughter will be having another baby in the future and I am going to refer her to your website for information about the disposal diapers that you like and use. On thing from the past, that was helpful to me was cornstarch. You mentioned diaper rash and we used this over vaseline to rashes on the bottoms. Not really what doctors say today, but it worked!
Do you also have ideas about which baby foods to use? different brands? What about cereal when they are young to help them sleep through the night? Just some questions, I had.
Your wife is lucky to have such a great father to help her. Baby fortunate too!
Great info., especially for those who have little ones. When I started reading about the Huggies wipes, I just assumed that they would be the perfect wipe because of their reputation for diapers. However, the possibility of having glass in the wipes scares me! No one would want to put their little one through that! Your review of the Berkley Jensen Ultra Sensitive Baby Wipes sounds way better than any other baby wipe I have tried. I especially like the fact that they don’t cause sensitivities to the baby’s skin. This is a big plus for me, as I am extremely chemically sensitive myself! Thank you so much for giving us a better option to check out as far as baby wipes go!
Blessings;)

When my kids were younger we tried baby wipe brands like Johnson & Johnson and also Kodomo baby wipes. Both were alright. No complains there. I agree that the wipes shouldn’t be overly expensive as it is used daily. I haven’t tried the Berkley Jensen brand before so I’m not sure how we’ll like it. Do they also come in trial packaging so that we try it first before buying? 1140 pieces is a lot especially for a brand that is new to us.
Hey
Wow – I am impressed. I have been using Huggies wipes since my second son arrived – but I didn’t buy them, we received the wipes as a gift and I didn’t even think about wipes. But now after reading your article – I am in shock that I haven’t thought about so many things. These wipes are scented and small so actually 2 reasons to look for a new ones. I will check your suggestion right away.
I just wiped up a wee one before reading this. Given the nature of my boy’s … leavings, I wholeheartedly agree that the size of a wipe can make all the difference. I figure at least 2 folds (3 swipes with the wipe) are the minimum.
My first kid was raised in cloth diapers. I know many people think they’re gross but I like them well enough. They were cost effective, and as you mentioned, harmless to the baby. Keep fighting the good fight and keep those kids clean!
Thank you so much for your review! I agree when I used Huggies baby wipes I did not like the feel or the texture at all. The only reason I used them in the first place was that it was a gift from my baby shower. I decided to stay with what I knew. I will check out the ones you suggested, though.
I am so glad that I came across your website. I have used Huggies diapers and wipes for a few years now. I agree with your review. That opened my eyes and made me understand the truth about them. I never thought a name brand would have so many bad things like they do.
Hi Win! First: Congrats on becoming a dad! My son is one year older than yours (born in July 2015) so I can follow along your thoughts quite well 🙂 Great article you put up there, thanks for sharing!!!
For our son, we use wet wipes only when we are away from home. At home, we’ve been using disposable washcloths from our local drugstore and warm water, which happens to work like a charm 🙂 (and saves us some money).
But I’m glad you found your favourite wipes. Pretty amazing how much time and effort you put into researching all this information! That’s what we as loving dads do, right?
Keep it up,
All the best to you and your family,
chris 🙂
Hello!
I have to say, at first glance your website immediately pulled me in. Your logo at the top is very engaging. The most helpful part I found, was your page on diaper rashes- one of the biggest problems for mothers of new babies , and one that many diaper compnies really don’t cover!
I am sure many visitors to your site will find the product knowledge and trust factor they need before making purchases, as your layout makes it very simple and easy!
Hello there,
Great post, We tried Huggies for my daughter but not the wipes we tried swimming diapers & it was fine, but I am glad to take a full idea about the cons of the Huggies wipes, thanks for the detailed review & we will take a look about your recommended substitution and give it a try.
Hi Win, I read the whole article and kept wondering how someone can write a whole page about baby wipes. It got me curious about the writer, and it made me click your about me page and surprisingly, you are a man 🙂
I do not recall many times my husband took the honour of using wipes, somehow he always dropped the child in time on my lap;) I am a mum of 6 and a grandmother of 3, and I run a daycare. So, I do have experience with all kind of wipes. And yes, there is quite a difference between the brands.
And I hope they invent someday a box as heavy as a tape dispenser because I always struggle with the last wipes.
I enjoyed your article very much, thank you!
Loes
A heavy box. It sounds like something brand name companies should look into lol. Thank you for the compliments. It means a lot.
wow reading about these baby wipes brings back many memories of cleaning my sons brown residue on a daily basis lol – glad to say he is well past that age now though 🙂
Definitely though i will be paying more attention to what wipes i use in the future if i have anymore kids, because as you point out it can be an easy thing to underestimate, when in reality if you look close its clear that some brands are just much better then others – The Berkley Jensens you recommend sound great.
You really know your stuff about this subject, and i think its important information so thank for sharing it 🙂
This is a great article and very useful for all new parents and even grandparents. We all want the best for our babies and keeping them rash-free is of most importance. I never heard of the brand you use and will definitely look into them.
I’m curious, did you compare your brand to any other brand other than Huggies? It’s a shame to think that a national brand like Huggies may cut corners on quality to fatten their bottom line.
Good job.
I will certainly refer Berkley Jensen Sensitive Wipes to my daughter’s mother who runs a day care. I thought that all wipes were inferior to Huggies before now, I did not know of this at all.
I love the fact that the wipes are big and wide they will eventually make economic sense as well as being very convenient.
I agree with you if there was glass in Huggies they could not handle the lawsuit they would receive.
Having raised three kids as a stay at home Dad ( 35 years ago) brings back so many funny stories when I had to change diapers and using baby wipes for all sorts of emergencies.
My wife and I used the best baby products on the market at the time and I believe they are still around on the market. My sons now Dads themselves still buy the Johnsons products including the wipes.
It seems that Berkley Jensen Ultra Sensitive Baby Wipes seems to have good reviews as well. It’s very hard to change mindsets unless customers are willing to try a product that matches up to the product you have been using for a lifetime
It does appear that your experience of these wipes is similar to mine and my partners.
For our two little ones, we’ve tried so many different brands of wipes, from those water wipe things to these Huggies ones.
They irritated both my kids skins and also as you say left a residue.
I will certainly be looking into the alternative you mention, however I have not seen them in UK shops so I’ll do some digging
Thanks,
Mat
Bj store is currently local to US residents but the wipes can be found on amazon. Check out the link above.
I had no idea that baby wipes could have glass in them?!?! That is insane to think that might actually be. Anyway, I agree with your research, you have to find something that will work for you. Just because something worked for someone else, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for you.
Interesting how you break down the attributes, I hadn’t thought of the dispenser, etc. Very good information.
Thanks for the article.
The glass might have been a myth but there was widespread fear all over. The dispenser is super important. It’s not simply because its convenient. It’s because huggies wipes comes in three large bags.
Very cute logo!!! I like that you take such a personal approach in your writing, which is very easy to follow. It has been years since I had to purchase baby wipes. If I remember correctly I used Costco brand and do not remember any irritation from them. I also always made sure to put A & D ointment on my son’s bum so that may have helped as well. Maybe you could incorporate that product in the “rash” section.
I looked into A & D ointment. I will write a review about it.
I have to share this article with my daughter. My granddaughter has sensitive skin and she is allergic to Huggies baby wipes. Likewise, for most brands. She developed redness and soreness and now my daughter just uses warm water and soft cotton towel.
We will try your suggested Berkley Jensen Ultra Sensitive Baby Wipes and see if it’s OK for her.
Thanks for posting this review.
Bj wipes are very good wipes. It will definitely not disappoint your daughter. It also adds to the convenience when she travels.
Honestly, I tried Huggies products for my daughter when she was first born. They were quite expensive compared to a lot of other products. And they also irritated my daughters skin almost every time we used them. We had to find other alternatives, and I’m glad we did. Because it turns out the cheap off brand wipes actually performed 10x better and were 10x cheaper haha We almost went with Berkley and Jensen, but found a cheaper alternative that actually worked. I’ve heard nothing but good things from them though.
BJ (berkley Jensen) wipes are pretty good. I just ordered another box recently. I can’t imagine myself going for another brand anymore.
First of all I though it was intresting that you had research baby wipes. It has been a long time since I had babies in my house. My research consited of buying the least expensive brand or what was currently on sale. Have you looked into other name brand baby wipes or generic baby wipes? It would be intresing to see how they all compaire.
Hey again
So I have had some look around about the wipes and now I can’t choose for which ones to go – either your recommended Berkley Jensen or Pampers Baby Wipes Sensitive. Pampers wipes are number one best-seller in Amazon – so there must be something good about them if people are buying them? What do you think about these wipes? There are more than 3500 reviews on Amazon for these wipes and 78% of them are 5-star reviews.
It’s true it is one of the best sellers on amazon. I checked into it and there are already several things I don’t like about it. People there mentioned that it causes diaper rashes, leave behind a slimy feeling, and leaves behind some residue. One good thing about it is that it’s big, which is good for someone like me with big hands. The only thing good about it is that it’s slightly cheaper than Berkley jensen wipes on amazon. If the lower price is important to you then go for it. I wouldn’t try it myself though.
Very interesting review. Personally I’ve gone with Kirkland with the dispenser. Which is an absolute must. But the dispenser is a bag which gets difficult near the end. My question with these is, if they are individually stacked and not perforated, how do would you ensure that the next wipe is available for you? Would you have to squeeze your finger through the opening to get them going again? This would happen every so often with the ones I currently use and it proves difficult at times when it needs to be swift and quick. Thanks for the review!
The wipes don’t have to be perforated in order for you to conveniently draw them out of the box. Think of tissue paper Kleenex for example, they are individual sheets that links each other in a clever way. When you draw one sheet, the next sheet conveniently sticks out for your next draw. However, if the wipes are perforated like a roll of tissue paper, then imagine drawing it out of the box with one hand. A whole roll will possibly come out with one draw which is a big waste.
